Limit Hold'em Poker

In Limit Holdem poker, bets are predetermined. This means that anyone who bets, raises, or calls must stay within the “limit” structure of the table. For example, if you are playing at a table that is defined as a $5/$10 Limit Holdem game, the lower fixed limit is $5, and the higher fixed limit is $10. Therefore, you must bet and raise, pre-flop and on the flop, in $5 increments. After the flop, on the turn and the river card, you bet in $10 increments. These fixed amounts are why Limit Holdem poker is short for “Fixed Limit Holdem” poker.

In Limit Holdem there is a unique rule that governs raising action. A "cap" is set on raises to limit action to one bet and three raises within any one betting round, the only exception being if there are only two players left in a hand. After one bet and three raises have been made, there can be no more raising by any player. The only options for players in this situation are to call the raise or fold their hands.

How to bet

Limit Holdem play is carried out in the Texas Holdem format, with stipulations and rules set on betting limits. There are four betting rounds in Texas Holdem, and the uniqueness of a Limit Holdem game is that the first two betting rounds are capped at the lower-level betting limit, and the second two betting rounds are upped to the higher-level betting limit. Bets can only be made in increments of these values. One exception to this rule is that at a live poker table in a casino with an odd higher-limit value, the small blinds are rounded down. For instance, a table at a live casino may have a $2/$5 Limit Holdem structure, instead of a $2.50/$5 limit structure. Online, though, this rule does not apply, as chips are virtual and can be divided easily.

Limit Holdem is privy to more fish than No-Limit Holdem because you can’t scare them off with big bets, and they tend to remain in the hand longer because they can afford to. Limit Holdem also requires a more patient play style, as it is a much slower game.
