What is a freeroll tournament?

Entrance into a free roll tournament is free. The prize pool and payout structure are predetermined and not based on tournament buy-ins or the number of registered players. Free roll tournaments, essentially don’t cost you anything, but payout in cash or other prizes (satellite seats, travel expenses, etc.). You could very well win a seat to the WSOP without paying one cent. It would take a while to progress, but it is possible. That’s the beauty of a free roll tournament.

Often many online poker rooms offer special free roll tournaments that are only available to players of certain stature, who have accumulated a certain amount of frequent player points. Sometimes these free roll tournaments are daily, weekly, or monthly and are by invitation only, the invitation being extended to only those who meet the requirements of the free roll tournament. You can also get into a free roll tournament quite often as a new player at a poker site. Some online poker rooms offer free tickets to daily newcomers free roll tournaments, for example. Ultimately, though, you can find free roll tournaments at virtually every online poker room. They usually are available in the form of no limit hold ‘em free rolls in different game formats like Texas Hold ‘em and Omaha Poker in multi-table tournament structure. Free rolls usually consist of at least 1000 players who come from all levels of experience, but it really depends on the free roll (e.g. exclusive free roll tournaments for upper-level players will, of course, be tougher competition).

Benefits of Free Roll Tournaments

Free roll tournaments are good for many reasons. They are great for testing out new sites before you go all in and deposit a lot of money at a new online poker room. Try out a free roll to see if you like the competition and atmosphere of the site. It’s also good for players who prefer to spend very little on their poker hobby. You can play free rolls and build your bankroll up. It could take a while, but it is possible to make something out of nothing. Many poker players make it a personal challenge to play free rolls until they win cash and try to turn that cash into more cash.

The best benefit to free roll is the experience you get at no cost to you. Playing in play money games and tournaments is just not the same. Playing in a free roll tournament is real poker experience without the price of poker chips.
