Ranking of the poker hands

Söndag 08 Mars, Haylie Kramer

cards-rulesEvery poker hand begins and ends with the potential to win the pot. If you aren’t familiar with the poker hand rankings that win poker pots, you’ll always be one step behind your opponents. Learn the rankings for poker hands here.

The one thing that unites all variations of poker is the poker hand ranking system that is a standard system used to determine every single winning hand of any poker game. If you are aspiring to be a poker player, you must memorize these poker hand rankings.

Hand rankings

Five of a Kind: This poker hand ranking is the highest hand possible. It is only possible when there are wild cards designated in a game. Five Aces would be the best five of a kind hand.

A Royal Flush: A Royal Flush is the highest natural poker hand ranking possible, when there are not any wild cards used in a game.

Straight Flush: A poker hand with five cards in sequence, all of the same suit (e.g. 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 of hearts). The highest ranking poker hand in is an Ace high straight flush.

Four of a Kind: When four cards of the same rank appear in one hand, four of a kind is made. The higher the card value, the higher the poker hand ranking.

Full House: A hand that includes exactly three of a Kind plus a pair (e.g. K, K, K, 7, 7).

Flush: When all five cards in one hand are made of the same suit, no matter what their face values, a flush is made. Obviously, a high card makes this poker hand rank higher.

Straight: Any five cards in subsequent order, of any suit will result in a straight (e.g. 5, 6, 7, 8, 9). Aces are both high and low ranking cards, but a straight cannot have an Ace in the middle (Q, K, A, 2, 3 is not allowed).

Three of a Kind: Any three cards with the same face value make a three of a kind.

Two Pair: Exactly two sets of two of a kind represent two pair. Higher pairs yield higher poker hand rankings.

Pair: Two cards of equal rank make a pair.

High Card: The highest ranking card in a hand is used to determine a winning hand when no other hand combination is made—the hand that includes the highest ranking card wins.

There are also low-ranking poker hands. The best low hand is A, 2, 3, 4, 5, also known as the wheel. These poker hand rankings are used in hi/lo games such as Omaha Hi/Lo, and Seven Card Stud Hi/Lo. The game of Razz also utilizes low-ranking hands to determine a winner.
