Katja was born in Hamburg, Germany in 1966. She was introduced to poker by her husband and professional poker player Jan von Halle. During a high-stakes limit stud game, he had to take a break, and she stepped in to play for him while he was away. Her positive performance, along with her husband’s praise, ignited within her a passion for the game. She began playing regularly in ring games, eventually adding tournament play to her portfolio. In 2006 she represented Germany at the Poker Nations Cup in Cardiff, Wales, although 2007 was her breakout year: that was the year she won a World Series of Poker bracelet, as well as being crowned “Europe‘s Leading Lady“ at the prestigious European Poker Awards, held annually in Paris, France. She has placed in the money 9 times in major tournaments throughout the world, for winnings in excess of $300,000. Although her tournament results are impressive, she considers cash games to be her specialty. In 2008 she became a member of Team PokerStars; she continues to represent the site at major live tournaments, and plays there under the name “KatjaThater.”
