Doyle Brunson Profile

: Doyle Brunson
: 77
: United States
:
WSOP : 3 times world champ
: $5200000

It’s hard to know anything about poker and not have heard the name of Doyle Brunson. Born in 1933 in the tiny town of Longworth, Texas, Doyle’s young life was defined by his athletic prowess. After winning the Texas State Championship for the mile run, and earning a spot on the all-state basketball team, Doyle had his pick from several prestigious athletic scholarships, and was eventually drafted by the Minneapolis Lakers. An unexpected leg injury would end his sports dreams for good, but while recuperating he began playing poker and soon found that his keen card sense could provide him a much more lucrative income than the 9-5 job he would otherwise be forced to turn to. Over the next decade he made a name for himself in the back rooms and illegal games - that were the standard in those days - before eventually settling in Vegas. Doyle took down back-to-back World Series of Poker championships in 1976 and 1977, but it wasn’t until the release of his book, Supersystem, that he became a household name. Today, Supersystem is still considered the authoritative book on no-limit Hold‘Em.
